The struggles of 'Vehicle Specific Tyres'

The struggles of 'Vehicle Specific Tyres'

We recently had a Maserati Grand Turismo here at Airways for some Pirelli MASERATI GRAND TURISMO tyres. Now you may ask why I highlighted the Maseratti Grand Turismo in the last sentence. Reason being, Pirelli like other major manufatures have different versions of the same tyre, to cater for certain vehicles, eg, Maserati, Ferarri, Mercedes, BWM etc. There reasons are vast, but mainly the ‘Vehicle Specific’ tyres have compound changes, subtle design changes or other changes to suit the vehicle.

We don’t usually struggle in sourcing these specific tyres, but in the case of the Maserati, we had a hell of a time, to a point Airways Tyres discovered a fault in one of the suppliers databases.

In the case of this Maserati, we placed the order with the supplier and received the delivery early the next day, but when we inspected the tyres, we noticed the tyres all thought the correct size and invoiced as a Maserati fitment was in fact the Normal version.

HOW COULD WE TELL……We know the Maserati Grand Turismo tyre is MADE IN ITALY and has MGT printed on the side. Whilst the normal one is made in Germany.

So we contacted the supplier, after many backwards and forward calls and incorrect deliveries, they found a fault in there system (the Maserati MGT fitment on there order page had been incorrectly allocated, they had in fact had the normal versions NOT the MGT’s), anyway after a warehouse check, the correct tyres where located and where finally received the full set.

Left MGT - Right Normal NOTICE the difference???

So why all the hassle, why not just fit the normal versions. Even the customer didn’t know there was a difference…..he had the non MGTs currently on the car, he even said he wouldn’t know the difference. One reason, that’s not how we operate, plus a picture speaks a thousand words.

Below is the comparison between the two.

MGT Left - Normal Right

The MGT is quite abit wider than the normal.

This along with other reasons is why in this case we didn’t want to fit the ‘normal’ ones, there is a noticeable difference in the tyre. If there wasn’t a benefit of fitting the MGT, why would Maserati and Pirelli go though the added expense of creating this MGT?

Final thoughts: This is an extreme example, it was only by request of the customer and our own commitment to supply the correct tyre for the application we went out of the way to make sure we fitted the correct tyre. Many customers don’t want or need the ‘Vehicle Specific’ tyres, so unless that’s what you ask for, we will advise on the best solution but we will take your lead.
